ABSTRACT REALITY: Nicolas Dubreuille - Solo Show, Brussels
Galerie Duret presents for the 2021 fall season the solo exhibition of artist Nicolas Dubreuille, Abstract Reality.
This exhibition brings together a collection of works that are representative of his multidisciplinary and free approach to geometric abstraction.
Nicolas Dubreuille’s painted metal sculptures reflect his desire to engage in dialogue with space while challenging the strict order of geometry. Created through the rhythmic assembly of angular and curved surfaces, they structure space, recreate volume, and leave room for the void, which becomes an active plastic element in its own right. With their vibrant colors and perfectly smooth finish, these sculptures possess a visual strength that blends the sobriety of minimalism with the lightness of pop art, showcasing Nicolas Dubreuille’s interest in artists as diverse as Anthony Caro and Keith Haring.
The same balance between construction and dynamism can be found in Dubreuille’s paintings. His geometric compositions are based on the masterful orchestration of flat, colorful shapes, following directions that emphasize vertical and diagonal contrasts between angles and curves. From their off-kilter juxtapositions and superimpositions emerge gradients of colors, subtle effects of transparency, and depth. In some paintings, elements of the composition stand out sharply from the white background, creating a sense of lightness and floating. Elsewhere, geometric forms interlock and confront each other, generating tensions that energetically animate the surface of the canvas.
