"What we see is only part of existence, and other invisible elements demand to be revealed through art".
Dominick Leuci is born in 1970 and he lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
He creates both sculptures and paintings, including 'Dream Hives' that explore the ephemeral nature of light. His more built up 'Vortex' paintings take on a cosmological expression with light and shadow.
With his 'Dream Hive' series, atmospheric color field paintings morph into what the artist imagines are the shapes of dreams. The buoyant forms appear to fold and unfold within a two dimensional space. Working with fluid acrylic paint, the abstract forms are the result of a signature rhythmic painting that can appear like a nest or hive. Comprised of individual feather-like brushstrokes, each unique form is comprised of two connected hemispheres. Different regions in each painting are made whole through the synaptic-like connections of the brushstrokes that transfer what appear to be pulses of light. The organic form also references an egg, and combined with the color genesis of the paint itself, color field abstraction is pushed into a geometric representation of fertility and life's cyclical motion.
Extensively developed color combinations for 'Dream Hives' act like DNA sequences that are set off while painting that create unique chain reactions of color...which is light. These can be varied in hue and value, or monochromatic. The fluttering paint motifs combined with color/light exploration become romantic odes to the Light and Space Movement. Working under a trance-like state, both paint and surface exchange energy in which the artist tries to achieve a sublime moment of 'lift' by allowing materials to have an expression of their own. Paint and process reveal a dynamic spatial quality where the painting surface remains partially exposed. By applying various curvilinear gestures, hand pressure and directional movement, the brushstrokes create multiple levels of translucency providing a sense of levitation.
Counter to the 'Dream Hive' paintings, Dominick also paints/sculpts his 'Vortices', which are time-based works made with hundreds of built-up layers upon canvas. These are created with both an additive as well as reductive approach; much like sedimentary layers found within geology. Depending on the level and angle of light, dimensional shifts occur that convey the essence of light itself. They are solid in color/light suggestiong voids in space, and are partially inspired by the Zero Movement.
Following a scientific current, Dominick believes 'what we see, is not all we see.' His explorations in both art and design create tethers between us and the hidden worlds within Nature and Science. He refers to some of his works as 'atmospheric occurrences' or 'meditative abstractions' that offer a sense of contemplation, mystery and wonder within the our ethereal world...'ETHEReality.'
